TUAMOTUS

One of those sunsets that just keeps getting better and better.

On our first night in the Tuamotus, we stopped on Tahanea- an uninhabited atoll deep in this stunning archipelago. We had a perfectly windless evening where the ocean turned to glass and the sky lit up with orange fiery clouds.

The next morning, the water was still glassy and a group of blacktip reef sharks patrolled the waters around our boat.Rainbows and sharks are common subjects in the Tuamotus, two things I’ll never get used to.

Our parking spot for 3 days in the middle of nowhere.

At each outgoing tide, hundreds of Grey, Blacktip, Silvertip and Lemon sharks congregate at Fakarava Southpass.

A massive pod of melon headed whales greeted us just as we thought we had finished our morning dive. One of my favourite things underwater is, when the sun comes out and the clarity is so good that is creates these magical beams of light leading into the depths.

One of my other favourite things underwater is when ~100 melon headed whales show up.

I’m always a fan of searching for miniature life underwater. The macro lens is such a good window into another world.

MARQUESAS

A group of seafarers, likely from Tonga and the Samoan islands, landed on the shores of the Marquesas islands as early as 1,700 years ago (~300AD).

They became the Marquesan people, and are believed to have been the original settlers of many of the major islands in the South Pacific. Including much of Polynesia, Hawaii, Tahiti, Rapa Iti and Easter island.

Today, the Marquesans are some of the warmest and most welcoming people anywhere in the world.

We landed at a small beach with a few homes on Hiva Oa. One of the locals picked us a heap of bananas, mangos and limes as a gift, invited us to stay with them for dinner, and sent us on our way.

In the southern hemisphere, there is a small cloud of stars branched off from the core of the Milky Way. This is a group of Nebula that make up a mini galaxy next to our Milky Way. This is called the Small Magellenic Cloud.

I’ve had the opportunity to explore these incredible groups of islands twice now and they couldn’t be more different. The jagged peaks of the Marquesas and volcanic beaches make them stand out in comparison to the flat tropical atolls in the Tuamotus.

The Tuamotus however, stand out with the immense biodiversity underwater, the crystal clear water and unexpected wildlife encounters.
